Crochet Sunflower Large Granny Square for Crochet Afghan / Crochet Motif #9

Designing this square I was thinking about sunflower as the main motif. I wanted to design a square with a textured center. Usually, sunflower crochet squares have very simple centers made of several rounds of double crochets. I wanted the center to be more textured and at the same time, it would be possible to mix several brown yarns to make it look more interesting. And here it is. It is easy to crochet.

Yarn: weight 4, worsted Hook: 4.5 mm Size: 12 inches, 31 cm

Abbreviations: st – stitch, sl-st – slip stitch, ch – chain, sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, dc – double crochet, fp – front post, tr – treble crochet, tr5tog – 5 treble crochet together, dc3tog – 3 double crochet together.

ROUND 1. Magic ring, ch2, 16dc into ring. Join to 1st dc with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.

ROUND 2. Join with a standing sc in any st, *ch7, sc in next 2 sts*, repeat ** 8 times. Omit last sc. Join to standing sc with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.

ROUND 3. Join with a standing hdc in any sc before ch7 space, *fptr around dc of round 1 in which is made sc before ch 7 space, skip ch7, hdc in next st, ch1, hdc in next st*. Repeat ** 8 times. Omit last hdc. Join to standing hdc with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.

ROUND 4. Join with a standing popcorn in any ch 1 space, *ch3, skip next st, popcorn in next st, working in back of ch 7 of round 2, ch3, skip next st, popcorn in ch 1 space*, repeat ** 8 times. Omit last popcorn. Join to standing popcorn with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.

ROUND 5. Join with a standing sc in any ch3 space, *skip next st, 5sc in next ch3 space*, repeat ** 16 times. Omit last sc. Join to standing sc with a sl-st.

ROUND 6. ch8, *tr5tog over next 5 sts, ch5*, repeat ** 16 times. Instead of last tr of last tr5tog, join to 4th chain of ch8 with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.

ROUND 7. Join with a standing sc in ch5 space, * fpsc around next st, 7sc in ch5 space*, repeat ** 16 times. omit last sc. Join to standing sc with a sl-st.

ROUND 8. ch2, dc3tog over same and next 2 sts, *dc in next 5 sts, dc3tog over next 3 sts*, repeat ** 16 times. Omit last dc3tog. Join to 1st dc3tog with a sl-st.

ROUND 9. ch1, sc in same st, sc in next 6 sts, * hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, in next st (2dc, ch2, 2dc), dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 13 sts*, repeat ** 4 times. Omit last 7 sts. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st.

ROUND 10. ch1, sc in same st, sc in next 5 sts, * hdc in next 4 sts, dc in next 4 sts, in ch2 space (2dc, ch1, 2dc), dc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, sc in next 11 st*, repeat ** 4 times. Omit last 6 sts. Join to 1sc sc with a sl-st.

ROUND 11. ch1, sc in same st, sc in next 3 sts, *hdc in next 7 sts, dc in next 5 sts, in ch 1 space (2dc, ch1, 2dc), dc in next 5 sts, hdc in next 7 sts, sc in next 7 sts*, repeat ** 4 times. Omit last 4 sc. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st.

ROUND 12. ch1, sc in same st, sc in next 17 sts, *in ch1 space (sc, ch1, sc), sc in next 35 sts*, repeat ** 4 times. Omit last 18 sts. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st, fasten off, and secure ends.
